7 Mindset Changes Successful People Learn to Embrace
7 Mindset Changes Successful People Learn to Embrace7 Mindset Changes Successful People Learn to EmbraceMore than anything, your mindset determines your success. If Oprah had a negative mindset, her empire wouldve never gotten off the ground, and Steve Jobs wouldve been yet another burnt out and fired founder, if it wasnt for his determined thinking.Granted, youre probably not walking around like Eeyore or acting incredibly negative- but who couldnt use some more success?Making these simple mindset changes can help you achieve the radical success youre after. Bonus Theyre easier to implement than you may think. Check them out for yourself1. Turn Envy Into AdmirationTo change schwimmbad habits, we must study the habits of successful role models, said Jack Canfield, entrepreneur, motivational speaker, and author ofThe Success Principles How to Get From Where You Are to Where You Want to Be.How many times have you done the opposite of this, and found yourself jealous of someone else, may be without even realizing it?ur natural tendency when we see people who have more success is to envy them. Sometimes this envy can turn into belittling their achievements She only got that promotion because shes related to the CMO.Successful people, however, refuse to let envy take over. They train themselves to remember that theres always more to someones story than meets the eye, and they use this perspective to feel genuinely happy for others who achieve success. Even better, they finda mentor(or a few) to inspire them to reach higher, and you can too.2. Turn Procrastination Into AchievementProcrastination can come in many forms and, at one point or another, weve all given into it. We can fall into the procrastination trap by just thinking about one word in our minds later.Heres a super simple mindset shift for making yourself more successful in no time Every day, tackle the task that you dread the most first. If you want to become a more successful partie, eliminate that word fro m your daily planning and decide to knock out the most overwhelming task with your morning coffee. Whatever the task is- and whatever the day is- wake up and, as Nike said, just do it.3. Turn Gut Reactions Into Level-Headed ThinkingWhile many of us face the urge to procrastinate tasks, theres a contrasting mindset thats just as easy to fall into Making rash decisions based on emotions. But, as the popular saying goes Dont make a permanent decision from your temporary emotion. In my many years in finance, Ive seen people throw decades of financial planning out the window because of their emotions. And its beyond easy to do this in a stressful workplace, too. When successful people find themselves in situations where theyre extremely angry, sad, or frustrated, they let themselves ride out those emotions without acting on them. The simple act of waiting to make a decision until youve returned to a levelheaded state can play a huge role in the success you achieve.4. Turn Defensiveness Into CuriosityRaise your hand if you justlovegetting feedback and critiques. No one?Okay, so maybe hearing criticism is a little difficult for all of us. But, in order to become more successful, its necessary. And, to become radically successful, you may even need to startaskingfor feedback.Forbes found a strong correlation betweenleaders who asked for feedback and leaders ranked highest for effectiveness. Leaders who were in the lower 10% of people who asked for feedback were only ranked as 17% effective by their peers and employees. Meanwhile, leaders who were in the top 10% of people who asked for feedback received an average effectiveness rating of 83%.Rather than fearing feedback and defending any critiques, try to be curious of how others view your performance. This curiosity and the process of asking for feedback can be difficult, but ultimately it will provide insight that could be the difference between reaching your goals and falling short.5. Turn Talent Into HabitsStudies have found that shifting from afixed mindset to a growth mindsetresults in radical success. If you arent familiar with these terms A growth mindset is one that believes intelligence and skill can be developed, while a fixed mindset is one that believes intelligence and skill are static.A person with a fixed mindset is likely to think, Im a naturally talented writer, so its likely that I will achieve great things in the writing field. While, at first, there may seem to be nothing wrong with this mindset, it only applies to one niche. This same persons fixed mindset will also think, Im not naturally talented at public speaking, so its unlikely that I will achieve great things in public speaking.Having a fixed mindset will convince you that you cant succeed before you even try, while implementing a growth mindset will encourage you to put in the time and effort to succeed. So start shifting your thinking toward growth today.6. Turn Tasks Into SkillsWhats a task that you hate being assigned to at work? For some people, the idea of being in meetings all day sounds dreadful (yup, Ive been there). For others, being asked to organize spreadsheets sounds like a snoozefest.Jeffrey Pfeffer, who has been a professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business since 1979, has something to say about this. In his article aboutbecoming successful by changing your mindset, he talked about how being assigned complex, time-consuming, and even dull projects is bound to happen to everyone, but the difference between a successful person and an unsuccessful person is how they approach it.Pfeffer left his readers with some advice you need to listen to The next time you find yourself at some meeting or event, the next time you get what you think is a boring, trivial assignment, consider how your mindset affects your approach.7. Turn Success Into HumilityFinally, one of the most important things you can do as you become more successful and earn more leadership roles is to channel that succe ss into humility.More than50% of people have left a job because of their manager. Have you? Its said that people dont quit jobs- they quit bosses. If youve ever been in that position, consider the qualities of that boss that left a bad impression. One of the most common traits cited by people who loathe their bosses is simply a lack of empathy.John Maxwell, leadership author and speaker, characterizes good leaders as the following A person who takes a little more than their share of the blame and a little less than their share of the credit.Remembering this perspective and adopting a humble mindset will allow you to influence others to become more successful, and it may even carve the path for others to view you as their own role model for success. What do you think of these mental changes? 10 Traditional Sayings to Remember While Job Seeking
10 Traditional Sayings to Remember While Job Seeking 10 Traditional Sayings to Remember While Job Seeking Difficult times during a job search can cause job seekers to question everything they hear. However, throughout the course of a career, there are certain things that never change. They never change even while the way people talk and dress for work and job interviews seems to change every week! Read these 10 traditional sayings that are true for job seekers in 2018, as much as they were 50 or 60 years ago. 10. Expect someone to âgive you the cold shoulderâ How it applies to job seeking There will be times when companies seem to disappear after an interview. You hear nothing from them, even when the interview seemed to be a success. They gave you the cold shoulder! History of the saying The cold shoulder today is considered rude. But it was actually regarded as a polite gesture in medieval England. The host of a feast would let his guests know it was time to leave by giving them a cold piece of meat from the shoulder of beef, mutton, or pork. 9. Know how to âbreak the iceâ in your new job How it applies to job seeking Breaking the ice is a gesture made to begin a friendship or relationship on a positive note, something job seekers may think about after accepting an offer and discussing moving forward. History of the saying Before trains or cars, port cities that relied on trade suffered during the winter because of frozen rivers preventing commercial ships from entering the city. Small ships known as âicebreakersâ would rescue the icebound ships by breaking the ice and creating a path for them to follow. 8. âPeople in glass houses shouldnât throw stonesâ How it applies to job seeking Never speak negatively about your previous boss during job interviews. You appear to be someone who tends to attack others unfairly, which is bad for team chemistry and many other reasons. More so, someone looking for a job is in no position to accuse others of wrong-doing. History of the saying The saying can be traced back to Geoffrey Chaucerâs âTroilus and Criseydeâ. The original intent was to say, âThose are vulnerable should not attack others.â 7. âDonât get caught red-handedâ when it comes to your resume How it applies to job seeking Never lie on your resume. The last thing you want during an interview is to be caught red-handed in a lie because of your resume. History of the saying This saying comes from an old law that stated a butcher had to be caught with the animalâs blood on his hands in order to be convicted of butchering an animal he/she did not own. 6. âGo the whole nine yardsâ in your new job How it applies to job seeking This simply means, âAlways do your best!â Whether it be a job or job interviews, always make the most of every opportunity. History of the saying World War II Fighter pilots received a 9-yard chain of ammunition. Therefore, when a pilot used all of his ammunition on one target, he gave it âthe whole 9 yards.â 5. âGive a man a fish you feed him for a day, teach him to fish you feed him for a lifetimeâ How it applies to job seeking Never expect any company to simply give you a job. If the job is earned through your efforts, you will last longer in the company because you respect something more that you worked for. Anything job given to you without any effort can be taken away just as fast. History of the saying The origin of the quote is highly contested. The belief is it first appeared as a principle of alleviating poverty by facilitating self-sufficiency in the 12th-century by philosopher Maimonides in his eight degrees in the duty of charity. But it has been translated into so many cultures since then that every culture can stake a claim in its origin. 4. Donât ârub people the wrong wayâ How it applies to job seeking Walking into an interview acting overly confident and rude, or not confident at all, can ârub people the wrong wayâ. Basically, it is the opposite of making a good impression on companies and hiring managers. History of the saying In colonial America, servants were required to both wet and dry-rub the oak-board floors each week. If you did this against the grain of the wood, streaks would form, making the wood look awful to the homeowner. 3. âDonât put the cart before the horseâ How it applies to job seeking Sometimes we see jobs we want so badly we are willing to apply even though we are not qualified. Skills and trades have to be learned first. A new resume is in order or some interview prep is required. Going after a job before you are prepared is putting the cart before the horse. History of the saying The earliest known reference to 'putting the cart before the horse' comes in John Heywood's âA dialogue containing the number in effect of all the proverbs in the English tongue, 1589â. Ultimately, this saying means, âAvoid disrupting the logical order of things.â 2. âShow your true colorsâ during an interview How it applies to job seeking Always show your best self in an interview that you plan to bring to work every day. Let them see your true colors so they know exactly what makes you special and valuable to a company. History of the saying Warships used to fly multiple flags to confuse their enemies. However, the rules of warfare stated that a ship had to hoist its true flag before firing. Therefore, they showed their true colors. 1. Donât âspill the beansâ about your previous company How it applies to job seeking When you are in an interview the last thing you want to do is start revealing secrets or speak negatively about the company. You can get yourself in trouble with previous companies, or worse, make the new company think you cannot be trusted. History of the saying In Ancient Greece, beans were used to vote for candidates entering various organizations. One container for each candidate was set out before the group members to place a white bean in the container if they approved of the candidate and a black bean if not. Sometimes a clumsy voter would accidentally knock over the jar, revealing all of the beans and allowing everyone to see the otherwise confidential votes. So, if you have a confidentiality agreement or you just do not approve of your last company, do not spill the beans and allow everyone to see what you know!

Different Types of Online Jobs for Teachers
Different Types of Online Jobs for Teachers Different Types of Online Jobs for Teachers As higher education institutions continue to make distance learning a part of their long-term strategies, the need for online teachersand other non-teaching, education positions such as instructional designersis expanding rapidly. However, the growth in the online education industry is not limited to colleges and universities. K-12 and high school level jobs for online teachers and tutors are exploding, as is businesses need for educational professionals in creating online training materials and courses. Often these jobs for online teachers are work-at-home opportunities (or could eventually become work at home), and so they represent an avenue for more flexible work that benefits for those in the education field. This list provides descriptions and links out to more resources. For specific companies that hire online teachers and education professionals, see this list of online education jobs. Online Teachers: Elementary, Middle and High Schools While higher education gets all the buzz for its online learning growth, K-12 school systems are embracing online education as well. In 2010, 39 states had implemented some online learning for K-12 students, and in many of the remaining states some districts offered online education (Keeping Pace, 2010). These online teacher positions are either directly through governmental entities (state, county, city or school district) or for companies that contract with school systems. In addition to the institutional jobs for online teachers, K-12 teachers can find work as in private online tutoring for students. Specifically, some of the positions in online K-12 education include: Online classroom teachersOnline tutor jobsInstructional designersHigh school instructors for foreign languages and other subjectsTest preparation and/or scoring jobs Qualifications for these online teacher jobs vary widely with some jobs requiring teaching certification or advanced degrees while others simply make a platform available for writing ?online courses or for connecting online tutors with students. See this list of jobs for K-12 online teachers. Online Teachers: Colleges Both completely online colleges and brick-and-mortar colleges are expanding their online course offerings. Naturally, this increase in enrollments means a greater demand for course development personnel to create the courses as well as online faculty to teach them. These are the two most basic categories of work in online colleges, but there are plenty of other opportunities: Online faculty, online course instructors and teaching assistants for college-level distance learningWriters/instructors of adult ed online courses offered at community collegesOnline tutors for college studentsForeign language and ESL teachersUniversity-level course developers, instructional designers (ID) and subject matter experts (SME)Test preparation and/or scoring jobs for GRE, GMAT, LSAT, etc. Most jobs teaching at online colleges requireat an absolute minimuma masterâs degree. Tutoring too generally requires a masterâs. Instructional design jobs may only require a bachelorâs and experience. Test prep jobs usually require a high score (95th percentile and up) on the test. See this list of jobs for online faculty. Online Jobs for Teachers: Corporations As more companies cultivate a telecommuting workforce, they need virtual training products to give their employees the skills to succeed remotely. And it may be more cost effective for on-site employees to train virtually. To meet this need, some large companies are hiring in-house instructional designers to design training programs and sometimes online instructors, though this task may fall on existing staff. Frequently, however, these training products are designed by companies that specialize in creating them. Either way, there is a growing need for educational professionals outside the world of academia. For-profit companies offer test preparation courses and materials for professional certification in addition to test preparation for academic tests. And many private-sector businesses contract with government and academic institutions to offer educational services. The jobs in this area include: TrainersOnline tutorsAdult ed, professional certification instructorsInstructional designersTest preparation and/or scoring jobs forTextbook and test editors Qualifications for these corporate education jobs vary. Professional experience in instructional design, training or education is usually required.

What Happens to Your Pension When You Leave a Company
What Happens to Your Pension When You Leave a Company What Happens to Your Pension When You Leave a Company Breaking ties with an old job is often enjoyable, sometimes bittersweet, and other times just plain bitter. If you have a defined benefit pension, breaking ties can also be complicated. What happens to your pension plan when you leave a company before youre ready to retire? Will you get the money, and what should you do with it? Are there tax consequences you need to consider? There was a time when some folks wouldnât consider leaving a job with a defined benefit pension, but people change jobs much more frequently than in the past, and the types of benefits employers provide have changed. If a better offer comes along before retirement, itâs up to you to decide what to do with the pension you have accumulated. Whatâs a Defined Benefit Pension? A defined benefit pension is what most people think of as the traditional, old-school pension that your father or grandfather had. You know, the type that guarantees workers who stay with a company a lifetime income stream during retirement. Defined benefit pensions are not as common these days, they have been replaced by defined contribution plans, like 401(k)s, which put much of the savings responsibility on the employee and do not come with any guarantees of a set amount of retirement income. Are you Vested? According to the Department of Labor, in a defined benefit plan, an employer can require that employees have 5 years of service in order to become 100 percent vested in the employer funded benefits. Employers also can choose a graduated vesting schedule, which requires an employee to work 7 years in order to be 100 percent vested, but provides at least 20 percent vesting after 3 years, 40 percent after 4 years, 60 percent after 5 years, and 80 percent after 6 years of service. Plans may provide a different schedule as long as it is more generous than these vesting schedules. You are only entitled to the vested portion of your pension at the time you leave your employer Pension Options When You Leave a Job Typically, when you leave a job with a defined benefit pension, you have a few options. You can choose to take the money as a lump sum now, or take the promise of regular payments in the future, also known as an annuity. You may even be able to get a combination of both. What you do with the money in your pension may depend on your age and years to retirement. If you are young and have a relatively small amount of money at stake, a lump sum may be the easiest choice. Keep in mind that most annuity payments are fixed and do not keep up with inflation. Todayâs small annuity will look even smaller in the future. In 30 to 40 years, the buying power of your pension could be greatly reduced. Invest it yourself, perhaps with the help of an accredited financial advisor, and you may be able to get a better long-term return on your money. However, âknow thyselfâ, if you are a disciplined investor, managing your pension resources will make more sense than if you are prone to fear based reactions to market moves. On the other hand, if you are closer to retirement and looking for guaranteed income, the annuity may be a more attractive option. You donât have to worry about investing the money yourself in the precarious pre-retirement years. You may also have a better sense of the companyâs near-term health and ability to meet its pension promises, (pensions are insured by the government through the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, but when companies go under, employees and former employees usually donât get everything they had been promised). Sometimes, companies will offer extra benefits to encourage older employees to stay in their plan. If your research indicates that your plan is underfunded or is likely to be so in the future, then you might be more likely to select a lump sum. What to Do With a Lump Sum Pension Payment If you do take the lump sum, consider transferring the money directly from your pension into a rollover Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to keep it from being taxed. If your company writes you a check, you have 60 days to move the money into a tax-favored account before the money is taxed. Unless you really need the funds, itâs best to avoid spending the lump sum before retirement. Not only are you missing out on long-term investment growth, but you will also have to pay taxes on the cash plus a 10 percent early withdrawal penalty. If you have significant assets in your plan, you could face a significant tax bill. Within a rollover IRA, the funds can be invested in any way you choose. You could even purchase an annuity within the IRA to capture some of that guaranteed income on your own. Some retirement plan administrators, including Vanguard and Fidelity Investments, offer advice and online tools to help employees decide between an annuity and a lump sum. Itâs worth playing around with a few of them before making a decision. You can also contact plan administrators for advice based on your specific circumstances and goals.

Why Employers Dont Give Feedback to Candidates
Why Employers Don't Give Feedback to Candidates Why Employers Don't Give Feedback to Candidates The majority of employers are not legally required to supply job candidates with information about why they were not hired for a job. Exceptions to this may exist when an employer is a governmental agency, covered by civil service requirements, or if the employees have a collective bargaining agreement that outlines the process for promotions or transfers. So, if you are seeking a job in the government or a workplace with a union contract, make sure you understand the rules that pertain to hiring, promotions, job transfers, and other conditions of employment. In these cases, it is best to seek legal advice for what is required in the city, state, or country where you live. Even though feedback is not legally required, if you were not hired for the job after participating in an interview process, you can ask for feedback- and its generally a good idea to do so. You might not receive any helpful information, but sometimes even generic responses can offer a clue. Why Feedback Is Uncommon Legal concerns and limited time are among the top reasons you might not get feedback if rejected for a job. Many attorneys recommend that employers provide little feedback to job candidates. They are concerned it can be used or misconstrued by the applicant to demonstrate discrimination in the hiring process. Many employers follow this advice and consider it safest to avoid providing any feedback. Beyond legal concerns, time is limited. A form rejection letter still takes staff time to develop and send and providing feedback to a candidate takes additional time. On top of that, most employers want to avoid what can be a difficult phone conversation. They dont want to take additional time coping with a rejected candidate who becomes upset or angry. By the time you find out youve been rejected, hiring managers or human resources have already moved on from you as a candidate, so spending more time on you is not a priority for them. In addition to a lack of time, most hiring managers want to avoid questions from rejected candidates about how they can improve their resumes or interviewing skills. HR employees know their own hiring practices, but they only can guess what other companies are seeking and dont see themselves as qualified to offer such advice. Feedback That Might Be Provided As a job searcher, you likely are hungry for feedback. The longer theyâve been searching for a job, the more desperate you might be to find out why you are not getting the job. An employer who is willing to take the time and can offer constructive, actionable feedback is a welcome gift. Unfortunately, 70 percent of employers surveyed by job recruiter Gerry Crispin in 2012 did not provide feedback to candidates who are not hired. The survey included 100 American companies most admired for their HR practices. Still, several reasons why employers might want to provide feedback to a candidate were cited in the survey: They like a candidate and believe they would hire her for the right opportunity in a less competitive recruitment. They want to create an environment of goodwill for the company in which candidates will tell friends and social media positive things about interviewing with them. Reputation plays an important role as talent becomes scarce. The companys reputation as an employer of choice is dependent on how they treat candidates as well as employees. They want a candidate to experience the companys integrity and transparency in its hiring practices so he is less likely to target the firm with a lawsuit.

3 Common Salary Negotiation Scenarios and What You Can Learn From Them
3 Common Salary Negotiation Scenarios and What You Can Learn From Them 3 Common Salary Negotiation Scenarios and What You Can Learn From Them Entering into a salary negotiation with an employer can be an awkward and anxiety-inducing experience. But by taking the time to properly prepare, youâll not only put yourself in a position to get the best deal possible, youâll help calm jittery nerves. Following are two examples of how a salary negotiation can go awry â" and one that went well. All three anecdotes provide valuable lessons on how to conduct yourself during a salary negotiation so you achieve the best result. Going in unprepared Samantha landed a job interview for a copywriter position. In the middle of the job interview, the hiring manager surprised her by asking about her salary expectations. Having not given it sufficient thought prior to the interview, Samantha was quick to say $45,000 (a couple thousand more than she currently earns). She thought nothing of it until she was formally offered the role after a follow-up interview. Sally then did some research and realized that with her two years of experience she could be earning between $46,750 and $70,000. Unfortunately, she felt she had already boxed herself in. Lesson: Do your research prior to even a first interview. While itâs generally best to let the employer broach the subject of salary, itâs smart to enter the meeting with a range in mind in case the discussion turns to compensation. You can find out what your skills and experience are worth by reviewing industry resources such as The Creative Group Salary Guide. Getting personal Dave was offered a new position as a marketing manager with his current employer. Dave has been with the company since he graduated college four years ago. He was keen to make a bigger dent in his student loans. During the salary negotiation discussion, Dave mentioned the loans and asked for more money. Lesson: Keep it professional. Employers are not interested in your personal finances. When asking for a higher salary, Dave should have focused on highlighting concrete examples of the value heâs added to the organization. Considering the big picture Sean is a skilled art director with more than five years of experience. He recently received two job offers for about the same starting pay. One offer came from a small firm where he could see himself grow and prosper; the other opportunity came with a higher starting salary at a more established firm. Sean knew that the smaller agency wouldnât be able to beat the higher salary, but he carefully considered the entire compensation package and successfully negotiated additional vacation days and a flexible work arrangement, which closed the gap between the two offers. Lesson: Consider the full picture. Sean didnât base his decision on salary alone. He took the time to evaluate the entire package, and then negotiated wisely in regard to additional perks and benefits. Read our post on six key questions to consider when negotiating salary.

Managers, Help Your Team Take The PTO They Need Heres How!
Managers, Help Your Team Take The PTO They Need â" Here's How! Managers, Help Your Team Take The PTO They Need - Here's How! Attention all managers, your team may be burnt out. While you may not be micromanaging or piling too much work on their plates, a new survey from Glassdoor shows that American workers are forfeiting half of their vacation time. Itâs true! T the average U.S. employee (of those who receive vacation/paid time off) has only taken about half (54 percent) of his or her eligible vacation time/paid time off in the past 12 months. And while this may be positively affecting your success metrics, it may be detrimental in the long term. Unused vacation days compound stress , taking a toll on workersâ well-being and the well-being of their families. In addition, unused vacation time can reduce productivity and innovation at work. And managers are at the front lines of preventing this type of burnout by setting a positive example of work-life balance and encouraging employees to take time off. However, many leaders and executives fail to model healthy behaviors. Yahooâs Melissa Mayer said she used to do 130 hours workweeks, General Electric CEO Jeff Immelt claims to have worked 100-hour weeks for a quarter century, and Apple CEO Tim Cook gets up at 3:45am every morning. Itâs no surprise employees take cues from this. According to Project Time Off , 65% of employees reported that they hear nothing, mixed messages, or discouraging messages about taking time off from managers, while 80% said if they felt fully supported and encouraged by their boss, they would be likely to take more time off. Plus, Millennials are the generation most likely to forfeit time off, even though they earn the least amount of vacation days. Work martyrdom and the always-on nature of the Internet-driven work environment may be contributing to Americaâs vacation deficit. Constantly rewarding or honoring staff who burn the candle at both ends and donât take vacations can lead those who value work-life balance and family time to feel ashamed of their desires and set up for mediocre performance reviews compared to overachievers. Working hard doesnât have to mean working long hours. Remember, creating a vacation-friendly culture is important for employeesâ well-being, since multiple studies have linked the practice of taking vacations to good health. Healthy employees are more likely to be productive and happy employees.

Weed-Fighting Robots Could Replace Spraying
Weed-Fighting Robots Could Replace Spraying Weed-Fighting Robots Could Replace Spraying Weed-Fighting Robots Could Replace Spraying Most farmers today spray large amounts of herbicides over crops that have been genetically modified to resist these chemicals. The global market for herbicides is estimated at $25 billion, with three billion poundsof herbicides used every year. Indiscriminant crop spraying has negative impacts to the environment, including toxic runoff that can pollute water sources and harm human health. And after 20 years of heavy spraying, weeds have grown resistant to glyphosate, the main ingredient in Monsantos Roundup, reducing its effectiveness as a weed killer. However, robots may be coming to the rescue. Several innovative technology companies are developing weed-killing robots that selectively poison weeds with microbursts of herbicides, vastly reducing the amount of herbicides used by farmers. These robots roll through the fields, using sophisticated computer vision systems to identify individual weeds along their routes. This technology is also cheaper than widespread spraying, allowing farmers to reduce their costs and, in the process, disrupt the multibillion-dollar herbicide business. EcoRobotix and Blue River Technologies are two companies that are close to commercializing their robot systems. For You: Ultrasound Patch Monitors Critical Components EcoRobotix has designed an autonomous, seven-foot-wide robot equipped with a camera, GPS, artificial intelligence, and two robotic arms that apply herbicide when weeds are identified. Being solar-powered, it can work up to 12 hours a day without human intervention. With a weight of 130 kg distributed over four wheels, the robot does not compact soil and can work with more sensitive crops that heavier spray systems cannot. The vision system enables the robot to follow crop rows and detect the presence and position of weeds in and between the rows. When a weed is located, it is covered by a cup on the end of a robot arm, which then delivers a microdose of herbicide into the cup. The robot adapts its speed to the concentration of weeds and is most effective in fields where the level of concentration is low to moderate, so it can cover the ground at a reasonable speed (about five acres a day). It can be completely controlled and configured using a smartphone app. EcoRobotix has carried out pilot projects in Europe and recently closed on a $10.7-million round of financing. Its expected to come to market in 2019. Blue Rivers See Spray. Image: Blue River Technology Blue River Technology is developing a tractor attachment that uses robotic nozzles to deliver herbicides to kill weeds. Massive libraries of plant images, computer vision, and artificial intelligence allows the system to identify virtually every plant in the field. It does not rely on spacing or color to identify weeds: it instantaneously recognizes the difference between plants, even under conditions that challenge the human eye. The system also makes adjustments and learns as it goes. In a unique closed-loop cycle, a second set of cameras allows it to check the robots work as it gathers data on the tens of thousands of plants in each field. The robot has been tested in U.S. cotton fields, is towed by a tractor, and could reduce herbicide use by up to 90 percent, according to the company. Deere Co. bought Blue River Technologies for $305 million in 2017. The companys intellectual property will be a key resource for Deeres new AI Lab, which will focus on the use of artificial intelligence to help farmers grow enough food for an exploding global population. What [this technology] allows us to do is move to the plant level, and start managing at that plant level, says Alex Purdy, director of John Deere Labs. Thats going to have transformative power in agriculture, both in terms of yield but also in terms of cost for growers. What [this technology] allows us to do is move to the plant level, and start managing at that plant level. Thats going to have transformative power in agriculture.Alex Purdy, director, John Deere Labs The plant-by-plant approach marks a major shift in agriculture from standard mass-spraying methods. Not only does it vastly reduce the amounts of toxic chemicals applied to farmland, it saves farmers roughly 30 percent compared to mass spraying. This creates more room for experimenting with more exotic and less toxic (or even organic) herbicides. Because were now giving the grower an order of magnitude reduction in the amount of herbicide theyre using, all of a sudden these more expensive, exotic herbicides are now in play again, says Willy Pell, director of new technology for Blue River Technologies. If continued advances in plant-by-plant weed control result in robots that manually weed plants, the need for herbicide applications will be significantly reduced, or even eliminated. Our motivation was environmental in the first place, with the reduction of herbicides, but we would also like to try to make work on the soil look more attractive to the successive generations, says Steve Tanner, co-founder of EcoRobotix. In creating this innovative working tool, adapted to the needs of farmers for whom soil conservation is a priority, we likewise aim to demonstrate that high-tech has a place in the agriculture of tomorrow, alongside traditional inherited wisdom. This is not intended to devalue human labor, but makes it less taxing and less hazardous to health, while being sustainable in both ecological and economic terms.
